I was lucky to receive a copy of Joelle Hoverson’s latest book, Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts. This is a really gorgeous, inspirational book! This book has a really wide variety of projects and ideas. I really like how the projects are segmented into categories based on the length of time the project takes. I like having the time expectations set upfront. We all know how “misleading” some projects can be. They look simple, fast, and cute when in fact they are actually time/soul sucking vortexes---but don’t mind me, I am not bitter. ANYWAY. Back to the book. I was leafing through the book when I came across the “Puzzle Ball.” My sister and I actually had these when we were little, which probably explains my fascination. Just as a disclaimer, I have another book that has a puzzle ball pattern in it and my previous attempt ended in failure with a side of tears of frustration. In the puzzle ball introduction, Joelle discusses her previous attempts and failures. She understood my shame! So with a little trepidation, I looked through the pattern, and contemplated the possibility of another attempt. I decided to take the leap…
…and was happy I did!
Notes on the project: Joelle did a great job with the pattern and explanation. I pretty much followed her directions. The pattern is very forgiving, like Joelle states. This was really good, because half way though I did have my doubts. The only thing that I would change is the use of the safety pins in the final construction. I ended up making another ball (I know, I AM a glutton for punishment sometimes) and I did not use the pins, instead, I just sewed the pieces together one by one (which I found much faster and easier).
Notes on the book: This is a great book for crafters of all skill levels. There is some really great information on tools and techniques as well as the plethora of fantastic projects. Definitely worth checking this gem out.
