As soon as I started planning A's baby shower I knew I had to incorporate a dessert bar. Amy Atlas, the dessert bar guru, provided me with plenty of inspiration and lots of ideas. Here is what I have learned from drooling over her incredible pictures:
1.) Her chic displays of deliciousness always start with a color palette and theme. For my dessert bar the theme was bunnies (not too overt) and the color palette consisted of blue and white with hints of pink and gray.
2.) The table layout should be balanced but not symmetrical. Adding platforms to create different height displays also creates interest.
3.) Have a strong focal point for the table. I chose a beautiful cake made by K. Rose Cakes to be the centerpiece for the baby shower's dessert bar.
4.) Have a variety of treats with varying sizes. Make sure to neatly arrange the treats. You don't have to put all the goodies out at once. Save some to restock part way through the event if necessary.
5.) Hang something--a banner, tissue pom-poms, lanterns, etc. behind or over the dessert bar to create even more visual impact. OK, I skipped this part...the ceilings were too high in my space.
6.) Be sure to add some custom details to the treats. Labels are easy to customize and print out.
7.) Don't forget to add some pattern to your service ware. Place coordinating patterned paper on your flat trays.
8.) Make sure your background is coordinating with the dessert bar. This is easier said than done, luckily the paint on my walls went well enough.
Okay, enough tips...time for pix...
The dessert bar was a big hit, but people were shy when it came to chowing down on all the goodies. In anticipation of this I had cake boxes ready to go so the guests could load up on sweets to take home to their sweetie or kiddies. The cake boxes were sealed with a hand stamped bunny sticker (I love stamping).
The day before the shower there was massive baking going on. Thankfully I had lots of help! Friends made the job a lot more enjoyable and much faster. One person did the nose, another did the pink in the ear and finally I did the eyes. Here is a shot of the mini bunny sugar cookies in progress. These are the same little bunny cookies we made for Easter, but I only made a handful then.
